see moreJoin the Heritage Museum of Asian Art for a special preview evening celebrating Beasts, Aviary and Ritual of Ancient China, an extraordinary exhibition exploring the symbolic and spiritual world of ancient Chinese jade.
Featuring nearly 50 rare jade carvings spanning from the Neolithic period to the Ming dynasty, the exhibition presents ritual objects, mythical beasts, birds, ceremonial forms, and protective talismans that reveal how jade functioned not only as a material of beauty and status, but also as a bridge between humanity, nature, and the cosmos. Across thousands of years of Chinese history, jade embodied spiritual beliefs, political authority, ancestral reverence, and ideas of harmony and protection.
Many of the works on view have remained outside public exhibition for nearly fifty years!
The preview party offers guests an intimate first look at the exhibition before its public opening. The evening will include special refreshments, opportunities to socialize with jade collectors and members of the community, and a chance to meet the collector of this remarkable collection in person while learning more about the history and significance of the works on display.

This program brings together current Core member Liz Haas (they/she) and former Core member Nebula Li (he/him or they/them) to share the story of Invisible to Invincible (i2i), a grassroots APIDA LGBTQ+ organization dedicated to advocacy, visibility, cultural presence, and community care.
The discussion will trace the founding of i2i and reflect on the social and cultural conditions that made the organization necessary. Speakers will share memories and experiences from organizing and marching in Chicago’s Chinatown and Argyle Lunar New Year parades, moments that created visible queer APIDA presence within community and cultural spaces. The conversation will also look toward the present and future of i2i, discussing ongoing challenges, evolving community needs, and visions for future organizing, collaboration, and support networks. This event offers an opportunity to learn more about the intersections of Asian American identity, LGBTQ+ advocacy, public celebration, and community-building in Chicago.
Invisible to Invincible (i2i) is a community-based organization that celebrates and affirms Asian, Pacific Islander, & Desi Americans (APIDA) who identify as LGBTQ+ in the Chicago area. i2i’s work since 2005 has included working toward making Asian spaces more affirming of LGBTQ+ folks, immigrant and refugee justice, reproductive justice, racial justice solidarity work, family acceptance of LGBTQ+ Asians, visibility, and wellness. Currently, i2i organizes progressive educational programming, support spaces, and social events, both virtual and in person. We focus on community activism, primarily around queer, trans, racial, and immigrant justice.

see moreIn 2018, my friends and peers Joy Bailey and Derrick Dawson invited me (Kenji Kuramitsu) to collaborate with them to host students from Loyola Marymount University visiting Chicago on their annual Alternative Spring Break trip. Joy and Derrick then worked for an organization called Crossroads, a now former employer of mine as well. As a member of the Japanese American community in Chicago, I brought perspectives and legacies of our incarceration and resettlement experiences including my family stories and neighborhood research that my colleagues Dr. Ryan Yokota and Eric Langowski shared with me.
Joy, Derrick, and I offered the first Hyde Park walking tour – focused on the neighborhood's unique role amidst wider histories of racism and resistance in Chicago and in the United States – that year, and continued to do so for a few years annually. Since that time, I have continued to offer the tour seasonally and have now given more than a dozen tours to groups including local congregations, visiting theological education programs, young people on pilgrimages to Chicago, and 4 groups from the University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration with the support of Dr. Eve Ewing.
