Volunteer Service Day at St. James Food Pantry
Event Details
NAAAP-Chicago typically hosts an annual Service Day with St. James Food Pantry. This year was no different - we came out to help and felt a sense of accomplishment.
What affected us this time around was that St. James could have used a lot more volunteers to help distribute food to the needy - of which 80% are from the Asian American community. We know the pandemic affected people coming out to volunteer - and we totally understand. But we still wanted to help. So we've decided to organize a service day on a monthly basis, not just an annual one. Every second Saturday of the month, we will be there to help the food pantry. You have an opportunity to serve hundreds of families that day.
We are required to wear a mask (bring your own) and gloves (provided onsite) the entire time. Weather permitting we distribute the food outdoors in the parking lot, not in the building.
We encourage you to volunteer but only if you feel it is safe and you are healthy. Please register so we can give them a headcount.
Tasks for the day include:
- Unloading food from the delivery truck
- Table setup / food setup
- Distributing food to families
- Assisting families to carry groceries to their car
- Clean up after the event
